Crews hope to snuff fire near Camp Hale

Cliff Thompson

The fire is near Jones Gulch in an area that may contain unexploded World War II munitions used for training by the U.S. Army’s 10th Mountain Troopers at Camp Hale.

Firefighting crews expect to shuttle by helicopter to a ridge near the fire then cautiously hike in. Experts with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will survey the area so crews can then snuff out the fire.

Unexploded munitions are periodically found near the abandoned military base. Up to 10 percent of the explosives used, however, were duds.

Damp weather and rain showers have kept the fire from spreading so far, said East Zone Interagency Fire Officer Eric Rebitzke.

“It’s probably smoldering in roots and some duff,” he said. “It’s actually pretty hard to find.”
