Eagle-Vail brothers busted for illegally growing marijuana

EAGLE-VAIL — Let this be a lesson to you: If you earned an engineering degree from a prestigious university, then do not use your expertise to rewire your townhouse to illegally grow marijuana.

It’s one way to get caught, as brothers Hunter and Nevada Furrow learned.

Hunter Furrow, 29, and Nevada Furrow, 37, admitted to District Court Judge Paul Dunkelman that they were illegally cultivating marijuana in their Eagle-Vail townhouses, a Class 3 drug felony.

Both are free on $10,000 bond through their sentencing date in May.

Prosecutor Courtney Gilbert told the judge that while the Furrow brothers were growing pot, Nevada’s electric bill was at least three times higher than other units in their Eagle-Vail complex, sometimes as high as $1,000 a month. Hunter’s bill was as much as four times the other units, Gilbert said.

Nevada Furrow graduated from the University of Colorado Boulder with a bachelor’s degree in engineering.

In late January, SWAT teams led by the Gore Range Narcotics Interdiction Team — GRANITE — seized nine firearms and large quantities of marijuana and cash during the early-morning raids.

The marijuana was cultivated illegally, police said. The Furrow brothers were allegedly part of an interstate marijuana distribution network.

The GRANITE drug task force is a multi-jurisdictional comprised of police officers from the Eagle County Sheriff’s Office and Vail Police Department. GRANITE focuses on felony narcotics investigations.

During 2016, GRANITE investigated 56 felony narcotics related cases, made 58 felony narcotics arrests, and seized 1,106 grams of cocaine, 700 doses of LSD, 69,000 grams of marijuana, 310 grams of marijuana concentrate, two guns and $100,000 in cash.
