Culinary team holds fundraiser Thursday in Vail Valley

VAIL VALLEY, Colorado -The Battle Mountain High School “ProStart” Culinary Team won first place at the state invitational at Johnson & Wales University in March. The team plans to compete in the national competition in Kansas City from April 30 to May 2. This year’s team is JonPaul Ferzacca, Zander Lucero, Clint Hervert and Cliff Rodrick.Preparing and traveling to competition is very expensive. To be as successful, the kids need to practice their menu seven days a week. The products and ingredients are very expensive and other expenses include uniforms, equipment and travel expenses. The team is trying to $12,000. There will be a fundraising dinner at ZaccaZa in Avon from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Thursday. There also will be a silent auction.Battle Mountain ProStart students have earned enough scholarship money to attend colleges with most, if not all, of their tuition paid for through money earned in competitions.Battle Mountain culinary teams have won eight state championship medals and one national championship. Its teams has twice finished second at the national championship.
