Daily Editorial: Bring back the Worlds
Vail CO, Colorado
One need not be a Vail old-timer to remember the last time the Alpine World Skiing Championships came to town. It was 1999, and the excitement built for years and remained long after the event. It was a great boost for our community financially, pumped Vail’s image on the international stage and logged an incalculable amount of media exposure. That’s all good stuff when your bread-and-butter is drawing people here from other places.
Today, we started running a logo on our front page to show our support for the Vail Valley Foundation’s bid to get Alpine World Skiing Championships here again in 2013.
Sounds like a long time away, we know, but it takes years to plan for such an event, and with much of the action shifting from Vail Mountain to Beaver Creek, we’ll need it.
The decision about the 2013 World Cup will be made in May. If the races do indeed come here, it will mark only the fourth time they’ve been staged in the U.S. With competition from Austria, Italy and Switzerland, it’s no slam-dunk ” and we may even be a long-shot. But if anyone asks, let them know if Eagle County’s number comes up, we’ll be ready.
