Editor’s note: Today we shift the focus of Directors Corner to concentrate on the ongoing Vail International Dance Festival. Continuing this weekend, the festival provides an amazing opportunity to explore and enjoy the world’s best dance from Ballet to Modern to Ballroom. New to the festival this year is Artistic Director Damian Woetzel, principal dancer with New York City Ballet. Damian has graciously agreed to once again share his insight into the world of dance and the conclusion of this year’s festival.

Enjoy! ” Kris Sabel.

Hello Vail Valley! The last two weeks have been a whirlwind ” and we’re not done yet. The dance festival continues tonight at 7:30 p.m. with perhaps the most anticipated performance yet: the worldwide debut of Christopher Wheeldon’s new company, Morphoses. All year, Chris has been working toward this night; you could even say that for his whole life, he has been working toward this night. It’s going to be an historic evening featuring spectacular dancers from around the world, so make sure to be there; it really is a “where were you?” night you won’t want to miss.

Tomorrow we will present one of the festival’s proudest moments: two short performances at the Children’s Fountain in Vail Village featuring the students of our new dance/education outreach program, Celebrate the Beat ” “Pop Hop.” At 11 a.m. and 11:30 a.m., check out these local kids as they show you what they have been working on.

Under the direction of renowned teacher Tracy Straus, they’ve learned a brand new choreography inspired by the famous artist Keith Haring ” they’ve even painted a backdrop for their performance inspired by his work. All week these children have been exposed to music, dance and art in a relaxed, no-experience-required format, complete with live music by keyboardist Dawn Poff and drummer Shane Whitener. So please come out and support the kids as they show off their new appreciation and love for dance!

Back at the Amphitheater on Saturday night, it’s ballroom time! What an explosive way to wrap up the festival. Seats are already sold out, so come out for a gorgeous night on the lawn under the stars with these ballroom champions from around the world.

Our final performance this year is a free family matinee at noon on Sunday featuring the young and vibrant Hubbard Street 2. This promises to be a wonderful and relaxed afternoon, so bring the whole family and enjoy great dance by these magnificent young professionals.

It’s been such a pleasure for me to direct the 2007 festival, and I am so looking forward to next year already. Save the dates: the 2008 Vail International Dance Festival is scheduled for July 27 through Aug. 10. I can promise you another incredible lineup, with Morphoses returning for a second residency and so much more still to be announced. I hope to see you this weekend, and I wish you all a wonderful end-of-the-summer.
