Dangerous highway helped
BANFF, Alberta – Locals are rejoicing at news that Canada’s federal government may pump $70 million ($52 million US) into four-laning a perilously dangerous stretch of two-lane highway on the east side of the Continental Divide.Altogether, 24 people have died during the last five years on that 35-kilometer (21-mile) segment of the Tans-Canada Highway. Among the fatalities were bicycling tourists from America and hotel workers from the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise, notes the Rocky Mountain Record (Sept. 17).A truck driver who killed those American bicycle riders recently was in Banff to appear in court, and he told the Banff Crag & Canyon that the highway is a trucker’s worst nightmare.”There is nothing probably in the world, except in Third World countries, that could come near the danger level of certain stretches,” he said.The highway is Canada’s chief east-west vehicular artery, and in Banff it is clogged with both trucks and sightseers.Airport plans perturb paperHAILEY, Idaho – There’s much talk in the Sun Valley area of a new regional airport, one located 20 miles away from Hailey and other more-populated areas. Six times larger than the existing airport, it could accommodate more and larger jets.Whoa, horse! says the Idaho Mountain Express (Sept. 17) – a typical stance for that newspaper. What are the implications of this? “Check them off with a shudder,” advises the newspaper – more lodging, expanded roads, pollution, and pressures to develop rural areas.In short, “just another congested population area with the same aggravating problems that plague urban areas.”Drivers defended, sort ofJACKSON HOLE, Wyo. – Parking a car at the Jackson Hole ski area this winter will cost $5 where before it was free. It somehow seems un-American and perhaps, most of all, not Western, says the Jackson Hole News & Guide with an acerbic twist.Why, motorists are the very backbone of society, proclaims the newspaper with intended irony.In fact, there’s been some sourness since merchants and the ski area operator announced the plan, which is basically being pushed by local county commissioners. And the newspaper thinks that people have plenty of options for getting to the ski area other than driving solo.
