VAIL – In the biggest movement to sweep the runway in four years, designers are not afraid of the dark. Look at Marc Jacobs, Prada, Michael Kors. But even with pink’s somber alter ego – black – at the forefront of the season’s palette, luxury and feminine details are not lacking.Be it a political statement or a prediction about the economy, opposites attract when it comes to shifts in fashion’s late youthfulness.Women are no longer playing the role of the vulnerable girl who’s trying to make everyone else happy, but a whole new sexy suggesting their independence and authority. Fall fashion embraces individuality and liberates one’s ego.

Whether your personal style is victorian or military, bohemian or modern, the style of the season is grown-up Upper class Classics are back, and anything but boring. The streamlined silhouettes embody the old-fashioned drama of actress Katherine Hepburn. Timeless pieces play on prim necklines, pouffy sleeves, ruffled collars and long sweeping skirts. Charming rosettes, frilly lace, ruffles and bows, fall’s best lies in opulent details. Seemingly demure, a ladylike mystique replaces the overtly sexy.

Wear a ruffled frock during the day with opaque tights or a tailored blouse voluminous sleeves atop jeans. Remember, separates don’t have to be clingy and curvy to reveal you’re a woman. This season, daughters will be raiding their mother’s closets.Toned down

As drama rules this season, you have permission to don black again. The only difference being this time around it has personality, texture, shimmer and multifaceted shine that lends itself to mystery. Don’t give up color completely, just tone it down. For inspiration, open you jewelry box to find garnet-red, deep bronze and rich topaz and add instant glamour. Begin with classic black velvet trousers and a crisp white button down, an emerald satin belt and an amethyst plush bag.

Touchy feelyHeavy on texture, the key to this season’s sturdier fabrics is mix and match. Cozy up to contrast. Pair a velvet blazer with a tweedy cap and corduroys, a fur vest with a metallic blouse and jeans, a soft shearling jacket with suede slacks and a quilted bag. You don’t have to wait until evening falls to put on the ritz. Amid the season’s sobriety, fall’s glamour still radiates grace, confidence and, above all, serious fun.
