Dark skies approaching Avon

Daily Staff Report
Vail, CO Colorado

AVON, Colorado ” Residents and businesses have a little more than a year to comply with a town lighting law that aims to keep mountain skies dark.

The town’s “Dark Sky Preservation Initiative” is meant to keep light from leaking from homes, businesses and other properties so stargazers can still see the stars.

The law goes into effect Nov. 17, 2009/ More information on the ordinance, including examples of acceptable dark-sky light fixtures can be found online at http://www.avon.org/lightordinance. New light fixtures must be approved by the town’s planning department.

For more information or for approval of fixtures, contact Paul Brogren, code enforcement officer, at (970)748-4017 or e-mail pbrogren@avon.org.
