DA’s Office collects $50K through bad check program

Vail, CO Colorado

EAGLE, Colorado – The District Attorney’s Office says it has collected more than $50,000 in restitution through their bad check program, including $16,000 in 2010 alone. Established in 2008 at no additional cost to the taxpayers, the program defers criminal prosecution in favor of reimbursing the victim of the bad check for their losses. The program also offers accounting skills to the check writer so that they will learn from their mistake.

“This is just one more way we are helping the small business owner, the lifeblood of the high country,” said District Attorney Mark Hurlbert. “Our ultimate goal is to make sure the victim of a bad check is made whole while educating the check writer about the effects of his actions. If the check writer does not follow through with the program he will then face criminal prosecution. However, the majority of check writers have completed the program and community is better off for it.”

If you or your business are the victim of a bad check, you may submit your check directly to the District Attorney’s Office by using the appropriate forms. You may obtain these forms by stopping by the District Attorney’s Office or by visiting their website at http://www.da5.us. If you are a business owner and would like a sign warning potential bad check writers that you participate in the program, call the District Attorney’s Office and one will be delivered to you.
