David Erickson, Dec. 14, 1949 " July 18, 2008

David Erickson, of Gypsum, passed away in his sleep on Friday night. He was 58.

Born on December 14, 1949 in Eau Claire, Wisc., the son of Harold and Gladys E. Erickson (Gynnild), David graduated from Wausau East High School in Wausau, Wisc. in 1968.

He first came to Vail in 1967 and immediately fell in love with the region. He returned to Colorado in 1971 spending time in Aspen and the surrounding area. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1976 with a degree in sociology. He returned to Wausau and took a job at Wausau Steel in 1979 working his way to vice president, a position he held until 1991. He then started his own steel distribution company in Janesville, Wisc. Upon his retirement in 1993, David and his wife, Becky, moved with their sons, Tracy, Mark, and Jon to Edwards.



During his time in Edwards, David served as both the vice president and the president of the board of the Eagle County Charter Academy, helping the school to secure the land for its first Edwards location as well as its current location in Edwards.

He started the Eagle County Charter Academy golf team and was active in other youth sports in the valley. He frequently took it upon himself to become the travel agent for his son Jon’s hockey teams. He often spent his spare time golfing at Eagle-Vail and Cotton Ranch golf courses during the summer and skiing during the winter. Recently, David had been writing children’s books, completing two that he hoped to have published.

David is survived by his wife, Becky, of Gypsum; son, Tracy and his wife, Kathleen, of Edwards; son, Jon, of Edwards; father, Harold, of Eau Claire; sister, Kristine, (Steve) Hayden, of Eau Claire sister Kerri, of Eau Claire; sister, Kathleen, (Michael) Schremp, of Eau Claire; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his son Mark and mother Gladys.

A memorial service, presided by Pastor Mark Huggenvik of Mount of the Holy Cross Lutheran Church, will be held at 8 p.m. at the Beaver Creek Chapel on Friday, July 25 Before the service, a gathering for friends and family will held at the Red Canyon High School East Campus on Miller Ranch Road (next to the baseball fields at Berry Creek Middle School) in Edwards from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
