LEADVILLE – Lake County’s leaders are considering calls to broaden rustic Ski Cooper’s appeal, spurring concerns that the publicly owned ski hill could lose its down-home charm in the push for more business.

“We are sitting on a sustainable winter gold mine,” Leadville City Councilman Jaime Stuever said. “Ski Cooper will not solve all our economic issues, but it certainly has the opportunity to help our businesses stay open in the hard winter months.”

While a vocal group of locals urges change at the historic ski area about 12 miles north of town, the area’s 20-year, all-volunteer management board says it has kept the ski area stable and wants its contract renewed.

“We make decisions at Ski Cooper based on the survival of Ski Cooper. First, do no harm,” said John Clapper, a member of the nine-person board that runs the ski area. “If we take risks and we take chances with Ski Cooper and it falters, think about where we will be then.”
