Decision likely to lead to July election
VAIL – The Town Council will consider Tuesday reversing its approval of the controversial proposal to bring a bowling alley, movie theater and an ice rink to Vail Village. If the council doesn’t repeal its decision by at least a 6-1 vote, a townwide election will be set for July 11 on the proposal that known as “Solaris.”Opponents of the project gathered the 380 signatures needed to force reconsideration of the project on the Crossroads site.”It would be very doubtful” that the council would reverse its decision by a 6-1 vote, said Andy Wiessner, who helped lead the petition drive to challenge Crossroads.Craig Cohn, director of sales and leasing for Crossroads/Solaris, said he expects the election date to be set Tuesday.
“That’s what we’re anticipating is going to happen,” Cohn said.Opponents say the proposal is too big, and that developer Peter Knobel should reduce the size. Knobel says he won’t do that.Supporters of Solaris say it will bring much-needed amenities to Vail Village that will help bring life back to the town’s core.On March 21, the council approved the project, which includes condos, a 10-lane bowling alley, a three-screen movie theater, an ice rink/public plaza, restaurants and stores. It was a 4-3 vote, with Mayor Rod Slifer and councilmen Kent Logan and Kevin Foley voting against the proposal. Mark Gordon, Farrow Hitt, Greg Moffet and Kim Newbury voted in favor of the proposal.
