Deepest hydrants in lower 48 installed
Vail, CO Colorado
SUMMIT COUNTY ” Along with having one of the highest elevations of any town in Colorado, Montezuma now has a new claim to fame: The tiny town contains the deepest fire hydrants in the lower 48 states.
Lake Dillon Fire-Rescue recently installed a new fire hydrant system in Montezuma as part of a two-phase project to improve fire protection in the former mining town above Keystone.
Montezuma’s 10,000-foot elevation posed challenges for system designers and excavators because there was potential for ground to freeze as much as 10 feet deep. The supply lines had to be installed at 11 feet to minimize the risk of freezing.
“The hydrant company, Mueller, informed us that Montezuma now has the deepest hydrants in the continental United States,” said Lake Dillon Fire-Rescue Deputy Chief Jeff Berino.
Lake Dillon Fire-Rescue can now reach the majority of structures within Montezuma with hoses normally carried on the vehicles, improving response times and complexities of fighting fire in Montezuma. Before the new hydrants, firefighters had to truck in water in sometimes difficult and dangerous conditions.
