Deluge Lake offers rewards for tenacious hikers
If Im feeling like an advanced hike, Ill go up to Deluge Lake in the Gores, says John Bragg of Avons Bag & Pack Shop. Advanced might be a bit of a sugarcoating: Known as a grueling hike featuring steep grades and narrow tracks, the Deluge Lake trail nonetheless rewards the strong with a pristine alpine lake, scores of Gore granite spires and long views of the Sawatch Range and Mt. of the Holy Cross. After a short, gradual beginning, the trail quickly punishes the weak with 2,300 feet of elevation gain within the first two miles. If you can pass the gauntlet, though, a gentle stroll along the ridge leads to the aqua waters of Deluge Lake. This time of year, large snowfields will likely still run right up to the edge. From Vail, take exit 180 to the Gore Creek Trailhead and parking area. Head up the Gore Creek footpath and take a nearly immediate fork left on the Deluge trail, which leads northeast to Deluge Lake four miles down the path.
