Dems: Party delegates are most diverse group ever
DENVER, Colorado ” Democratic National Convention officials say the delegates expected to nominate Barack Obama for president make up the Party’s most diverse group at any of its previous conventions.
Convention officials say about 44 percent of the Democratic delegates are minorities and 50 percent are women. Another 31 percent are seniors or youths.
The oldest delegate was 91-year-old Sophie Masloff of Pennsylvania, but she had to cancel because of poor health. Convention officials were looking into who is the next oldest delegate.
The youngest delegate is 17-year-old at-large delegate David Gilbert Pederson of Minnesota.
The Democratic National Convention Committee compiled the statistics released Monday.
