Denver man sues human tissue provider

Associated Press
Vail, CO Colorado

DENVER ” A man who said he received a defective graft in his knee is suing a now-defunct company that is accused of providing the tissue by using corpses that were plundered.

Bryan Shepherd said in a lawsuit filed Friday in U.S. District Court that a graft he received in Golden in 2005 came from tissue harvested by Biomedical Tissue Services of New Jersey.

BMT’s former operator Michael Mastromarino faces charges elsewhere in schemes in which he is accused of buying hundreds of corpses from funeral directors, with body parts being transplanted in unsuspecting patients worldwide.

Shepherd’s graft failed, and he had surgery to replace it this year, the lawsuit said.

The lawsuit seeks damages from BMT, along with two companies that sold and produced the graft.
