DENVER, Colorado –Kristen Diane Parker, the former surgical tech accused of stealing powerful narcotics and then returning her dirty syringes, is a study in contrasts.

She is tender in describing her love for her father and her young son, edgy in detailing her love for mixed martial arts fighting, and proud in writing about her work in the medical field.

She is also, according to longtime friends, a woman who has battled substance abuse for years. By her own admission, she used heroin for three months last year when she lived in New Jersey.

It was there, Parker theorized, that she was infected with hepatitis C, according to court documents.
