Design at Altitude: Adventures in shopping in New York City
Design at Altitude
Staying on top of trends, knowing what will be the next hot accessory and keeping the showroom’s inventory unique and exciting requires traveling. Luckily, we love to hit the road! Our buying team has traveled the country this year to track down eye-catching and alluring accessories and furnishings.
It’s been particularly fun adding to our ever-growing list of personal items. From Kate Spade whimsical desk accessories (perfect for the going-back-to-college set) to adorable cashmere baby blankets and hats the buying team has been having a blast finding home and personal essentials.
The buying team just got back from New York City. The City That Never Sleeps certainly did not disappoint. The market pulses with energy, teems with shoppers and showcases some of the country’s most exciting new trends and vendors. Over the next few months, the showroom will be stocked with new inventory — you don’t have to wait, though. I want to share some of our favorite finds with you, and before long, we will head to North Carolina to shop for furniture.
Last winter, everyone was searching for fur pillows, throws and even chairs. The style holds, and we were able to find a stunning array of Tibetan lamb pillows in a huge range of colors we haven’t seen before. These will complement the everyday colors, and we can’t wait to get them in! We know how cozy these pillows feel, so we found a way to take them with you (sort of) in the form of fingerless, knitted mittens from baby alpaca yarn.
We’ve been searching for high-quality alpaca throws and found them from Alicia Adams Alpaca, owner of an alpaca farm in New York’s Hudson Valley. She creates these mittens, as well as luxurious throws, and we just love the farm-to-living room feel. With a sophisticated urban edge to the designs, even super models are clamoring for the coziness.
Speaking of coziness — we found the most amazing cashmere baby items from White + Warren. A chubby baby wrapped in luxurious sweaters and a pom hat is almost too much cuteness!
ADDING NEW COLORS
As designers, stylists and buyers, we always are imbued, surrounded and in love with color. Of course, we have our own personal preferences, but there are certain shades that are always popular. Obviously, the past few years have seen lots of gray. It’s a wonderful neutral tone that fits into most any home. But we’re happy to see the color palettes start to go deeper.
One of the easiest ways to start incorporating new colors into an existing scheme is with accessories, specifically pillows and throws. We’ve found pillows that come in many sizes, shapes, colors, patterns, textures and designs. These pillows from boutique vendors Rani Arabella, Piper and Priscilla & Parker are offbeat and fun. Pair a few blue, green and gold pillows with an alpaca throw and the room can take on a completely new feel … just in time for winter.
Speaking of winter, this is just the tip of the iceberg, so to speak. We can’t wait to share some of our finds with you over the coming months. In the meantime, we’ll start packing for our next shopping adventure.
