Developer closes backcountry skiing area

DENVER – A developer who purchased roughly 103 acres of mining claims near Telluride Ski Resort has closed it off to backcountry skiers and hikers.

Tom Chapman of Gold Hill Development Co. this week cited liability issues for closing the expert-only backcountry terrain near an area where Telluride recently began offering guided trips in Bear Creek drainage.

Telluride resort chief Dave Riley said the closure represents a small area of where it offers trips to backcountry skiers.

Chapman for years has found obscure, isolated parcels in the middle of federal land or national parks, which he has sold for millions.

He’s currently building a home on acreage inside Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park.
