Big retailers will be a part of the project, to be sure, but Lapin recognizes that with a Super Wal-Mart in Avon and a Target likely in Glenwood Springs in the near future, going with a traditional “big box” is unlikely.

In order to draw people from Glenwood Springs, Vail and other, perhaps more far-flung locales, Lapin’s vision for the Red Mountain Ranch property is a “lifestyle” shopping center, with perhaps a Mervyn’s or a Kohl’s as an initial anchor store. Smaller national retailers would presumably follow.

“If we’re able to attract high-quality, better-name stores, then maybe we can bring people from Glenwood and other areas,” said Lapin. “That’s what we’ll need.”
