DIA was busier than L.A. airport

DENVER ” Denver International Airport was the nation’s fourth busiest airport in the first half of this year, overtaking Los Angeles International Airport in the rankings.

DIA had 11.65 million plane boardings from January to June, just 10,000 passengers more than better known LAX in Southern California, according to Bureau of Transportation statistics.

“I am quite frankly surprised that it’s busier than (LAX). I think you have Frontier and Southwest pumping up your numbers.”

Denver has in recent years been the fifth busiest airport in the country, except in 2005 when it slipped to No. 6 when Las Vegas’ McCarran International Airport experienced a growth spurt and knocked DIA from the top five.

During the first half of this year, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport held the title as nation’s busiest with 20.78 million boardings followed by Chicago’s O’Hare National Airport (17.12 million) and Dallas/Forth Worth International Airport (13.84 million).
