Didn’t come here to ski
That group of planning experts visiting through the Urban Land Institute could be excused for playing hooky this week and going skiing. That way, at least they’d understand first hand why almost no one complains about snowstorms like the one that greeted them Monday.Sadly enough for them, though, skiing doesn’t appear to be in the picture. This group of eight has such a work ethic that they think stuff like solving our eternal, intractable housing crunch is fun. Let’s hope the Vail Valley Study Group’s report Friday morning is a bit more illuminating – and embraced by county leaders – than James Baker’s. There’s no pulling out of the Vail Valley in the future, unless you happen to be trying to make your living here and can’t afford a home.Fresh eyes, if just for an intensive week, can only help, though. These advisers, along with the various local efforts and attention under way, could well help make it easier for the people who work here to also live here. So, shhhh. Don’t tell them the skiing’s great.
