Dine at Outback in Avon Friday to support Muscular Dystrophy

Daily Staff Report
Avon CO, Colorado

AVON, Colorado ” Avon residents will be going down under at the 2008 Friedrich’s Ataxia Luncheon hosted by the Outback Steakhouse and the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA), on Friday at 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Avon Outback Steakhouse.

Outback Steakhouse hopes to educate its patrons about the realities of Friedrich’s Ataxia, a particular type of muscular dystrophy that injures the peripheral nerves responsible for transmitting messages from the brain to the rest of the body through luncheons similar to this one nationwide. Friedrich’s Ataxia symptoms include loss of coordination and weakness in the arms and legs and can sometimes lead to difficulty with speech and swallowing or glucose intolerance.

The $20 entrance fee will not only benefit MDA, but it will also include lunch at the Outback Steakhouse. Outback is a National Sponsor of MDA, helping to lead the search for a cure for Friedrich’s Ataxia. Organizers hope to raise $2,000; 100 percent of the funds raised will benefit MDA’s Friedrich Ataxia research efforts.

All proceeds from Friday’s event o will be allocated specifically for MDA’s research on Friedrich’s Ataxia. MDA is a national voluntary health agency dedicated to serving children and adults with neuromuscular diseases. Services that MDA provides include clinics at Children’s Medical Center and University Hospital, financial assistance with the purchase of medical equipment such as wheelchairs, leg braces and communication devices, flu shots and support groups.

MDA receives no funding from the government, but sustains its comprehensive program of services and conducts research through funds raised by events such as the Outback Friedrich’s Ataxia Luncheon and support from the community.
