Discover fun African folktales at Vail Public Library event today
Join the Vail Public Library today for a special presentation titled Discovering African Folktales presented by Denise Gard. Gard has entertained patrons at the Vail Public Library on numerous occasions; at the holiday party as well as previous summer reading programs.
Dig deep into the African wilderness and discover how the cheetah developed the black tears that stained her face.
Attendees will also learn how a blind hunter survived a battle against a herd of wild boars.
Each vibrant tale will engage the audience with clapping, noises and chants. Gard will help unearth the cultural tales of the Ashanti, Bantu, and others.
summer reading program
Dig into Reading, the theme of this year’s summer reading program, is held from 1 to 3 p.m. every Tuesday afternoon through Aug. 6.
Elementary students entering first through fifth grades, locals and visitors alike, are encouraged to join this free reading program. Weekly events include a read aloud story, art activities, games and then the special presenter.
Local teen and adult volunteers team up with the library’s children’s team to provide an enriching program. The goal is to keep students reading with fun activities and even a prize store for reward-based incentives.
Benefits of summer reading
Research has shown that participation in a summer reading program prepares students for a successful return to school in the fall. Without it, there is often a measurable loss in reader fluency over the summer months.
It is fortunate in Colorado that the Lt. Governor’s office is so actively involved in children’s literacy and supports events and initiatives to that end.
The event is free and registration is available online and at the event. Parents are always welcome.
