DNA links suspected serial rapist to 9 assaults

AURORA – Metro-area police are teaming up to catch a man linked to nine sexual assaults since January.Police say DNA evidence links one man to five rapes in Aurora, three in Denver and one in unincorporated Arapahoe County. They looked for a link after a criminal analyst with the Aurora Police Department found similarities between six assaults already tied to the suspect and three assaults in Aurora: one in January and three in June.Police in the three jurisdictions have formed a task force and circulated hundreds of sketches of the suspect.”He’s a threat,” said Terry Jones, Aurora interim police chief. All five rapes in Aurora and the one in Arapahoe County took place within a few miles of each other. Four were clustered near East Mississippi Avenue and South Havana Street. Most of the attacks happened at apartments or condos near areas of high foot traffic, such as strip malls or grocery stores, police said.An apparent six-month gap between attacks may indicate the man was in jail or out of state.”Our officers have this person’s mug shot with them … and hopefully we’ll catch him,” Denver police spokeswoman Virginia Lopez said. Two incidents in Aurora were similar to the nine sexual assaults, police said. The two women escaped before they were assaulted.Brents, who was identified through DNA evidence, has been sentenced to more than 1,300 years in prison.Vail – Colorado
