‘Do it 4 Derk’ stickers honor memory of Summit kayaker
Summit County, CO Colorado
SUMMIT COUNTY – Life may be short, so every day should be breathed with passion, love, respect and happiness. Stickers floating around Summit County saying “Do it for Derk” or “Count” are spreading this message in honor of Derk Slottow, a 21-year-old Summit High grad who died in a July kayaking accident.
Derk Slottow was paddling on the Big South Fork of the Cache La Poudre River near Fort Collins when he drowned after flipping his kayak and hitting his head.
According to Derk’s father Luke Slottow, both sets of stickers were conceived by friends and made to hand out at his son’s memorial service in July.
They were created “because he was all about living life to the fullest,” Luke Slottow said, also noting that the stickers were a one-time thing and there are no plans to make any more.
Friends and family of Derk Slottow remember him as a vivacious, loving, friendly young man who always had a smile on this face – “They just made it as a tribute to Derk. … It’s a reminder to everyone that life can be short, but you should enjoy every day,” Luke said.
The “Do it for Derk” was made with the AC/DC font, because he loved the band, Luke added.
Derk Slottow was also enthused about his studies, music, friends and outdoor activities. He was a civil engineering student and president of the Colorado School of Mines Kayaking Club.
Memorial fund success
Because Derk Slottow loved kayaking and shared his appetite for paddling by teaching others, the Slottow family asked that memorial donations for their son be sent to First Descents, an organization focused on providing whitewater kayaking experiences for young adults fighting cancer.
“There had been over $8,000 donated in Derk’s memory that’s helped a significant number of kids with cancer to get out on the river and get more self confidence,” Luke said. “Even though they have an illness, it doesn’t mean they can’t live their life to the fullest.”
