Donations reported stolen in Edwards

Money that was supposed to be donated to two local girls whose mother died in a car wreck was stolen from a collection jar at the UPS Store in Edwards, the Eagle County Sheriff’s Office said Monday.

Dolores Fernandez, 40, died after a three-vehicle crash on Interstate 70 in Edwards near Wilmore Lake on Feb. 7. Students from Eagle Valley High School organized a fundraiser, put out collection jars and set up a memorial fund to help her daughters, Carla Fernandez, 16, and Alejandra Fernandez, 9.

The theft at the UPS Store was reported Monday, but the Sheriff’s Office didn’t know Monday night exactly how much money was stolen or when it was stolen. The money was being collected in a big plastic jug at the checkout counter, Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Shannon Cordingly said.
