Drama Queen Ball set for Friday in Avon
Do drama and do good.
The Vail Valley Theatre Company is hosting the Drama Queen Ball, a benefit for the troupe and the local charity, the Children’s Global Alliance.
“It’s a chance for people to dance and have fun,” said Bart Garton, one of the Drama Queens putting it together.
Garton, by the way, is positively resplendent in his feather boa and matching pumps.
It’s the first time they’ve done it, but it seems to be pretty well organized, which is way more difficult than just being properly accessorized.
There’s Russian Roulette karaoke. You put your name in a hat and three names get drawn. You’re assigned a song they choose, not you, which will motivate you to ask a Higher Power, like the DJ or maybe even the Great Karaoke Guy in the Sky, that it doesn’t turn out to be MacArthur Park.
If fate giggles and makes you sing MacArthur Park in public for the amusement of the Body Politic, who looks smashing in that sequined gown, and you don’t look or sound anything like British actor Richard Harris, you can try your hand at a game show thing called “What’s That Line?” You’ll know it when you see it.
There’s a costume contest, of course, because it’s the Drama Queen Ball.
You’ll have your Dance Mobs, your Vestigial Vignettes and other general wonderfulness.
There’s a silent auction, so bring some cash.
It’s a relatively small venue, so you’ll want to buy tickets ahead of time, Garton said.
The Children’s Global Alliance is a local non-profit organization that was awarded Travelocity’s 2010 “Ambassador of Change Award.” It’s a service organization for American students ages 12-16 interested in hands-on volunteer experiences in impoverished countries.
Students raise their own travel and accommodation expenses. Money raised at benefits fund service projects that include planting crops, providing running water, buying school supplies, providing medical care, repairing homes and teaching classes on gardening and woodshop.
