Driver apparently kills himself after traffic stop in western Colorado
MONTROSE, Colorado ” Authorities say a man apparently shot and killed himself after he was pulled over by a Montrose police officer in a traffic stop.
The officer wasn’t injured.
Colorado Department of Public Safety spokesman Lance Clem says the officer tried to stop the man regarding defective equipment at about 8:30 p.m. Thursday, but the man drove away.
The driver later stopped, got out of his truck with a rifle and exchanged words with the officer. Clem says the officer took cover after seeing the rifle, even though the driver never pointed the rifle at him.
The officer then heard a shot and discovered the driver dead. Clem says the officer did not fire his weapon.
The Colorado Bureau of Investigation is assisting Montrose police on the case.
