DUI suspect who died not fully examined
DENVER ” An investigation by state regulators has found that Denver Health Medical Center didn’t properly examine a drunken-driving suspect who later died from untreated injuries.
The finding surfaced this week as part of a lawsuit filed by the family of Emily Rae Rice.
The 24-year-old Rice was taken to Denver Health after she was arrested on DUI charges in February.
The state investigation says she complained of shoulder and abdominal pain but the hospital took no X-rays.
She was discharged and taken to the jail, where other inmates say she cried in pain and begged for help.
She wasn’t returned to the hospital for about 24 hours. An autopsy found she had a ruptured spleen and a lacerated liver.
