Durango man arrested in clown hoax

The Durango police claim to know who the clown is: Troy J. Aderholdt.

According to Durango police, Aderholdt concocted an elaborate story about being attacked Monday evening by a man wearing a clown mask.

Aderholdt, 21, said a man in the clown mask entered the Alpine Inn and threatened to rob him.

Aderholdt claimed his skills as a recently returned Special Forces veteran from Iraq allowed him to fend off the attack.

Police said they were “uncomfortable” with the story, finding it inconsistent in several ways.

This morning, they contacted Aderholdt and confronted him.

During questioning Aderholdt admitted injuring himself and concocting the story, including his participation in Special Forces.

Aderholdt was arrested and taken to the La Plata County Jail where he is being held for investigation of false reporting, a class 3 misdemeanor.
