Durango mulling layoffs due to budget crunch
DURANGO, Colorado – Durango city officials are looking at laying off 12 employees and eliminating other positions to cover projected shortfalls in next year’s budget.
Getting rid of a total of 27 positions would save the city $1.2 million annually – $607,000 from the vacant positions, $609,000 from the staffed positions. Officials haven’t said which jobs would be targeted.
Durango has already slashed $2.59 million in spending, but is still in the hole because of a 10 percent drop in revenue.
The city has put off maintenance and purchases because of the financial crunch. City officials are also considering reducing the $586,000 in contracts with community groups.
A public hearing on the new budget is set for Nov. 17
