RED CLIFF, Colorado – Earlier this month, 20 sticks of very old dynamite were found by Excel Energy while working on electrical poles in the area. The Eagle County Sheriff’s Office removed the explosives from the area with assistance from the Grand Junction Bomb Squad.

Residents should be extra vigilant about uncovered explosives – especially around old mine areas –during the spring runoff season, the Sheriff’s Office says. .

Older explosives can become very unstable – simply touching them can be enough to set them off. Something as small as an old blasting cap the size of a pencil could cause the loss of several fingers, the Sheriff’s Office says.

Some general safety tips to follow:

• Don’t touch suspicious items

• Remember the location of the suspicious items (mark area if possible)
