Eagle bars harness pedal power
Eagle, CO Colorado
EAGLE, Colorado ” Kate Turnipseed worked hard to win a jar of molasses in Eagle, Colorado on Saturday.
During a slow biking race on Broadway, she managed to take the longest to coast from Third to Fourth street.
The contest was part of the One Eagle Bicycle Pub Crawl in Eagle.
Nearly 300 people discovered that sometimes, the best way to tour locals bars involves handlebars.
“I think Eagle is the new L.A. in terms of being the cruiser bike capital of the world” Turnipseed said. “I’m glad to see all the enthusiasts come out.”
Clad in costumes, sporting tricked out bikes, riders got progressively rowdier as they made their way from Yeti’s Grind to the Grand Avenue Grill, the Dusty Boot, Broadway Cafe and finally Brush Creek Saloon.
At the Broadway Cafe, Eagle resident Mike Gibbs stripped down to his boxers and strapped on a pair of heels to dance in a sexy legs contest.
He gave the whole event a rave review.
“I think it’s fabulous,” he said. “There’s hundreds of people here. The restaurants are killin’ it. Everybody loves it.”
The event raised $1,500 for One Eagle, a group of businesses that came together two months ago to jumpstart local commerce. Proceeds from the pub crawl will fund more Eagle events, said Doug and Erin Seabury, One Eagle members who own the boutique Everyday Outfitters.
Timed with Bike Month, the pub crawl was designed to market local restaurants and call attention to how easy it is tour the town on two wheels, Erin Seabury said.
“We’re really trying to get the attention that we are a biking community,” she said.
Judging by the packs of riders cruising along the roads, that plan worked.
Eagle resident Ben Linscott, 39, took to the streets on his red 1960 Columbia. He likes to collect and restore bikes, and saw the pub crawl as a chance to use his cruisers the way they’re meant to be used.
“Eagle is primed for biking,” he said. “I think we should jump on this and develop it. It creates an identity for this town. Some people think of this as just a bedroom community. It should be a biking community.”
