EAGLE, Colorado Eagles new growth polices aim to make the town the most livable in Eagle County, enhance the Colorado towns unique identity and strengthen the sense of community. Two years in the making, the proposal a set of guidelines known as the Eagle Area Community Plan were unveiled last month and are now ready for public hearings. The new plan represents the work of two consulting firms, a 20-member Citizens Advisory Committee and area residents who participated in several comment-gathering open house sessions. Additionally, many people offered their views about the future of Eagle by submitting comments on line or in writing. From there the plan outlines 11 factors that define livability: Concentrate urban and infill development Maintain the areas sense of community Develop a comprehensive integrated transportation system Provide stewardship of natural, scenic and environmental sensitive areas Protect and preserve wildlife habitat and corridors Develop a proactive open lands program Maintain and enhance recreational opportunities ” Provide affordable housing Diversity and balance the economic base Preserve historical resources Provide infrastructure and public services efficiently and equitably The plan then breaks down the Eagle area into specific character areas such as the Interstate 70 Influence Area and Old Town and Eagle River Corridor. The characteristics of these various areas are delineated and their future land use goals are defined.Based on the broad spectrum of debate we had at the Citizens Advisory Committee, the plan more than represents a broad spectrum of Eagle, said Rebecca Leanard of Design Workshop, the consultant firm who wrote the plan. The plan itself is a 114-page document that includes several maps that outline the land use issues presented. There is finally a good set of maps representing all of these things, Leanard says. This is one of the first times we have put all these things on paper.
