Eagle cause demeans itself
Ever heard of a fundraiser for scholarships or other worthy cause turning away contributions? An otherwise pretty cool project in Eagle has been smudged with some pretty petty politics. Apparently, if you are a developer or friendly to a developer, your donation is therefore unacceptable. Sorry kids.So Boots on Broadway has been tainted before those 5-foot-tall answers to Chicagos cows hit the street up and down Eagles downtown. For $1,250 sponsors provide fiberglass models of boots for artists to decorate.Vince Riggio, who aims to build the Eagle River Station shopping center off I-70 on the east side of Eagle, liked the idea of promoting downtown and the fundraising cause. Eye on Eagle, a new political group that supports economic boosters for Eagle, also wanted to contribute.Organizer Holli Snyder, of NRC Broadcasting, blinked when an unidentified business owner threatened to pull out if these folks were allowed to contribute. Jan Rosenthal Townsend, a fierce foe of development proposals on the east Eagle pastures, denied complaining to Snyder. But the local chamber board member did say the promotion should be reserved for bonafide businesses to a cause that benefits downtown. The Vail Valley Jet Centers money is good enough for downtown. The Eagle County Fair & Rodeos money is good enough. But a group promoting general economic vitality, and a business that does have a rather direct interest in seeing downtown thrive, these are akin to Osama bin Laden?Showing interest in causes and downtown viability is not something to spurn, whatever your views on a retail-residential development. This smacks of the stuff that cowboy boots are meant to kick. Don Rogers for the Editorial Board
