Eagle Co. rep to fill vacant Senate seat
Vail, CO Colorado
IDAHO SPRINGS, Colorado ” Dan Gibbs, Eagle County’s youthful state representative, has gotten a promotion of sorts.
Gibbs has been appointed to the state Senate seat vacated recently by former state Senate President Joan Fitz-Geral, who’s running for Congress.
A vacancy committee of the state Democratic Party named Gibbs to the Senate seat representing District 16 at a meeting Monday night in Idaho Springs. Party officials said Gibbs was elected by affirmation, and ran unopposed to fill the vacant Senate seat.
Fitz-Gerald was the first female state Senate president. She is running for the congressional district that includes Eagle County. That seat is being vacated by Democrat Mark Udall, who is running for U.S. Senate.
“It made my decision that much easier (to step down) knowing that Dan would probably get the appointment (to my Senate seat),” Fitz-Gerald said. “I feel really good about Dan’s leadership.”
Gibbs had represented House District 56, which includes Summit, Eagle and Lake counties. A replacement will have to be named to fill Gibbs’ position.
