Delta Airlines has announced it will provide daily flights through the Christmas holiday season from Minneapolis-Saint Paul to the Eagle County Regional Airport. The flights will run from Dec. 20 through Jan. 5.

According to Josh Miller, the county’s deputy director of Aviation, airport officials have been discussing the new flight “for some time” with Delta officials.

Airline officials “reached out to us last week” that the airline had gotten the correct planning schedule to fit in the route between Minneapolis and Eagle County.

“We’re really excited to see the (Minneapolis) route returning to (Eagle County), and have high hopes that the route will perform well,” Miller wrote in an email, adding that he hopes the holiday-season route will lead to further expansion of the route in the future.

Eagle County Manager Jeff Shroll wrote in an email that the flight comes with no minimum revenue guarantees. Those guarantees are generally funded by communities to ensure that airlines don’t lose money on new routes. If agreed-upon passenger numbers fall short, then communities pay the difference.

Delta already provides seasonal service from Atlanta and Los Angeles. In April, the airline announced it would also provide winter service beginning in December from New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport.

In addition to Delta, Eagle County also has seasonal service from Alaska Airlines and year-round service from American and United Airlines.
