EAGLE COUNTY, Colorado – In recognition of National Suicide Prevention Week Sept. 5-11, two events are being held in Eagle County. A two-day training session called ASSIST is being sponsored by the Suicide Awareness and Prevention Coalition of Eagle County. Heartbeat, the local Suicide Survivors Support Group, will be holding its fourth annual balloon launch on Sept. 8.

ASSIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training) is a nationally recognized program providing practical training for caregivers seeking to prevent the immediate risk of suicide. Participants encouraged to attend include:

• Anyone concerned about family or friends

• Natural helpers and advisors

• Emergency Service workers

• Counselors, teachers and ministers

• Mental health practitioners

• Workers in health, welfare or justice

• Community volunteers

The emphasis of the ASSIST workshop is on suicide first aid, on helping a person at risk stay safe and seeking further help.

In the workshop, participants will learn how to:

• Recognize invitations for help

• Reach out and offer support

• Review the risk of suicide

• Apply a suicide intervention model

• Link people with community resources

ASSIST will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sept. 8 and 9 at the Eagle Town Hall at 200 S. Broadway in Eagle. The cost is $20 and includes lunch on both days.

Continuing education credit is available for ECS teachers.

Heartbeat, the Eagle County group offering support to survivors of suicide, will hold its Heartbeat Balloon Launch from 12-1 p.m. Sept. 8 at the Eagle County Main Campus Courtyard at 500 Broadway in Eagle.

“Families, Community Systems and Suicide” is the theme for the lunchtime event featuring keynote speakers, pizza, educational booths and an annual balloon launch. Pazzo’s Pizza of Eagle will donate pizza.

This annual event helps raise awareness, supports survivors who have lost a loved one to suicide and works toward shedding the stigma surrounding depression and suicide. For more information, call Jill Baron at 970-309-7699.
