Eagle County Fair cuts taxpayer subsidy

Present: Jon Stavney, Sara Fisher.

People they talked to: Representatives of the 2010 Eagle County Fair and Rodeo.

What they talked about: The success of this year’s shorter, cheaper event. Event manager Brad Higgins told the commissioners that cutting this year’s fair down to four days was a success for participants, spectators and the bottom line.

The fair’s subsidy for this year was budgeted at just less than $200,000. The actual figure is closer to $170,000. The subsidy for the 2009 fair and rodeo was $316,000.

The subsidy was about the only thing smaller about this year’s rodeo, which had a record number of contestants and spectators.

What’s next? Commissioner Sara Fisher said the county subsidy to the fair is going to have to keep shrinking. She said that spending even $200,000 on the fair isn’t going to be possible in coming years.
