Eagle County kids win adventure scholarships

Daily Staff Report
Vai, CO Colorado

EAGLE COUNTY, Colorado ” Students and teachers from Red Canyon High School and Minturn Middle School received scholarships to go on hiking and rafting trips this summer.

Both schools are Expeditionary Learning schools, meaning their curriculums revolve around long, in-depth studies of big topics in the world like immigration and nuclear power. The students do a lot of hands-on work, receive a lot of their information first-hand from experts, and they take a lot of field trips.

The rafting and hiking trips, which will take place in Alaska and the Southwest, are meant to give the teachers and students ideas about how to make that hands-on, in-the-field type learning more effective in school. The scholarships cover tuition and fees.

Minturn Middle students Samantha Katz, Carmen Castillo and Riley Babcock received full scholarships for a Southwestern backpacking and whitewater rafting trip.

Minturn Middle teacher Mo Beck is going to Alaska for a 15-day sea kayaking and backpacking trip.

Red Canyon High School students Angela Lujan and Siara Rodriguez are going on two-week Southwestern backpacking and whitewater rafting trips.

Red Canyon teachers Christina Gosselin and Lara Jackson are going to Alaska for a 15-day sea kayaking and backpacking trip.
