Eagle County: Ruedi Reservoir expected to hit capacity today

Special to the DailyThe Roaring Fork and Frying Pan rivers are expected to carry even more water today as water is released from Ruedi Reservoir east of Basalt.

EAGLE COUNTY – Ruedi Reservoir east of Basalt is expected to reach capacity by 10 a.m. Thursday. Water will overflow the spillway, boosting flows in the lower Fryingpan River and bringing the potential for flooding in low-lying areas of Basalt.

Pitkin County has issued an e-mail alert to residents of the Basalt and El Jebel areas that predicts the increased flows will reach Basalt between noon and 1 p.m. The Fryingpan was running at 812 cubic feet per second at 9:15 a.m. Thursday. Officials are estimating flows will bump up by 100 cfs, at least initially, according to the county.

The Basalt Police Department is keeping tabs on the situation. Residents will be alerted via e-mail as conditions warrant.

Increased flows in the Fryingpan could impact low-lying areas along the Roaring Fork River below its confluence with the Fryingpan. The Roaring Fork is already swollen with runoff.
