Eagle County Schools superintendent’s contract renewed
Vail, CO Colorado
EAGLE, Colorado – Eagle County schools superintendent Sandra Smyser has a new contract.
The school board approved a new three-year deal for Smyser. She’ll be paid $183,928.85 per year.
Smyser found herself on the hotseat last summer when the school board voted her a performance bonus of more than $13,000, while cutting jobs districtwide.
School district officials pointed out that every employee is entitled to a performance bonus, including Smyser, and the school board remains committed to Smyser’s 2008 contract.
Smyser’s new contract seeks to change “components of the contract that were unsettling for some in the past,” the school district said in a written statement.
For example, if employees’ salaries change, freeze or are cut, Smyser’s will be, too. She will also defer taking her signing bonus until the economy improves or she leaves the district.
“Dr. Smyser has put systems in place in order to improve our status as leaders in education and she should be recognized for such accomplishments,” said Connie Kincaid-Strahan, school board president.
