Eagle County science school has new name, website

AVON, Colorado – Gore Range Natural Science School announces the launch of a new name, logo, tagline and website. The nonprofit has officially changed its name from Gore Range Natural Science School to Walking Mountains.

Along with the updated name, the organization has unveiled a new logo and tagline, “Explore your curious nature,” a message that will be carried out in promoting its hands-on educational programs for youth and adults.

Walking Mountains was founded by Kim Langmaid, who grew up in Vail and was inspired by the natural beauty of the Rocky Mountains. As the area grew and local resorts were transformed into international destinations, she longed for a way to share her passion for her mountain home.

A naturalist and graduate student, she opened the doors of the Gore Range Natural Science School in Red Cliff, offering her first program in the fall of 1998.

Today, Walking Mountains offers educational programs to thousands of students, residents and visitors. These programs engage experiential learning, foster critical thinking, and teach the scientific method through research-based curriculum.

“The name Walking Mountains is meaningful on many levels,” Langmaid said. “Our educational programs literally take people walking in the mountains. So, too, mountains walk, geologically shifting their shape and formation over time. The philosophy behind our educational programs is to study these changes in nature through the seasons and across the years by exploring the environment around us. Our tagline is an invitation to come out and explore, to bring your curiosity as a child or as a scientist. It also reminds us that nature itself is strange and wonderful, spontaneous, yet ordered.”

The name change is also part of a broader vision to expand the reach of this science-learning center. On July 8, Walking Mountains will break ground on three of four buildings to be built at the Buck Creek Campus in Avon, where they will offer year-round interpretative programming for school children and life-long learners. U.S. Sen. Michael F. Bennet is scheduled to headline the event.

An additional $1.5 million is being sought to fund the entire build-out of this project, which is being designed to attain a LEED Platinum certification and is slated to open in the fall of 2011.

Walking Mountains has launched a new website at http://www.walkingmountains.org.
