Eagle County sponsors Medicare workshops

Daily Staff Report

EAGLE COUNTY Eagle County Health & Human Services will host a series of workshops on Medicare Part D prescription drug plans in November and December. A Medicare insurance specialist will work with Medicare participants to help isolate three possible plans to consider prior to enrolling or changing to the single plan of their choice. The open enrollment period for Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Coverage is Nov. 15, 2006 to Dec. 31, 2006 for coverage to begin Jan. 1, 2007. Now is the time to switch plans if current beneficiaries are not satisfied with their present prescription drug plan under Medicare Part D. There are new premium, deductible and co-pay figures for 2007. Individuals who become eligible for Medicare during 2007 or who have certain special circumstances such as moving from one coverage area to another, will have a Special Enrollment Period to choose a plan at other times during the year.In Colorado there are 55 stand-alone prescription drug coverage plans approved by Medicare for 2007. Another 14 companies provide Medicare Health Plans with prescription drug coverage. Each plan has different drug coverage, premiums, deductibles, co-pays and pharmacy networks. Medicare requires that each drug plan cover both brand name and generic drugs. However, all plans will not cover all drugs. Some plans have an annual deductible before coverage starts and most plans have a coverage gap. Some plans cover generic drugs during the gap and a few provide brand-name drug coverage in the gap. Those eligible for Medicare may either enroll in a standard plan with lower premiums or select a higher premium plan with increased drug coverage. The Social Security Extra Help program can assist with Medicare Part D premiums and drug costs for qualified individuals and in some cases the program can assist with payment of prescriptions during the Medicare Part D gap period.Persons interested in attending the workshops should call 970-328-8840 in Eagle or 970-704-2760 to schedule an appointment. Please bring your Medicare ID and a list of your prescription drugs with dosages to the workshop.Call for a list of workshop times. Vail Daily, Vail Colorado CO
