Eagle County volunteers wanted for flu prevention study

VAIL CO, Colorado

Riverwalk Natural Health Clinic is currently seeking volunteers to participate in a flu prevention study. The study will examine the effects of elderberry extract on incidence of influenza-like illness over a 12-week period.

In traditional herbal medicine, the plant commonly known as elderberry has long been recognized and used for its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antiviral properties. While a plentiful amount of anecdotal and clinical evidence supports the efficacy and safety of this herb, scientific studies are limited but growing in number. In one in vitro trial published in Phytochemistry Today in 2009, elderberry extract showed inhibition of human influenza A (H1N1) infection by interfering with the ability of viruses to infect host cells.

In at least two small trials, one in a 1995 study published in The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, and one in 2004 in the Annals of Internal Mediciine, found elderberry to be effective at reducing symptoms associated with both influenza A and B.

As an effort to add to the growing body of scientific research and to find safe and effective approaches to flu prevention, Riverwalk Natural Health Clinic will offer a randomized, double-blind placebo-controlled study.

Eligible participants must:

• Be age 2 or older.

• Not have received any flu vaccines in the past 12 months.

• Have no history of flu-like illness during the previous nine months.

• Be willing to undergo a viral culture in the event of any flu-like illness.

• Take two teaspoons daily of elderberry syrup, or placebo syrup, for three months.

The study will be conducted at no cost to participants. You will not be compensated for participating.
