Eagle County wants to form housing authority

Matt Terrell
Vail, CO Colorado

EAGLE COUNTY, Colorado ” County leaders want to form a housing authority to manage Lake Creek and other affordable housing projects.

The county commissioners would preside over the authority, which would exist solely to build homes and buy land ” basically be the driving force behind affordable housing development.

This authority wouldn’t have the ability to tax, but it would be able to borrow money, which will be essential, said county housing director Alex Potente. Overall, it would give the county more flexibility and make building affordable housing projects much easier, leaders say.

A controversial power held by housing authorities is the ability to condemn property ” which is something the county has absolutely no intention of doing, Potente said. It’s too expensive and just doesn’t’ make sense for what the county is trying to do, he said.

A petition is now circling to form the authority. After 25 signatures are gathered from residents, there will be a public hearing and a vote.

It’s possible, that in the future, the county could form a “multijurisdictional authority,” which would involve multiple governments and organizations, and would also have taxing powers. County leaders say this is not something they’re planning in the near future.
