Eagle County’s first Little Free Library comes to Possibilities Plaza in Avon

On Thursday, a Little Free Library was placed on the eastern side of Possibilities Plaza along the Main Street Mall in Avon.

AVON — Little Free Libraries are a global phenomenon. The small, front-yard book exchanges number 36,000 around the world and are located in 70 countries — from Iceland to Tasmania to Pakistan. Now, a new Little Free Library placed on Possibilities Plaza at Avon’s Main Street Mall on Thursday will join the movement to share books, bring people together and create communities of readers.

The library contains more than 20 books, in both English and Spanish, for readers of all ages. The idea of the book exchange is simple: Take a book, leave a book. Little Free Libraries are dedicated to increasing book access and forging community connections. Little Free Libraries are available in Carbondale, Frisco and Breckenridge, but the library on Possibilities Plaza is the first of its kind in Eagle County.

“It’s our hope that this Little Free Library will inspire a friendlier and more connected community through paper books and a simple wooden box. The digital world is great, but nothing beats a paper book to share and exchange with residents and guests,” Avon Town Council member Scott Prince said.

Prince worked with other council members and town staff to bring the project to fruition.

“We want it to become a destination for people, whether they’re Avon residents out on an evening walk or visitors to the town,” Prince said.
