Eagle County’s New America School is great

This week, I had the privilege of attending a community forum at the New America School in Gypsum to discuss the sustainability of the school and the ability for growth in the coming years.

The New America School is part of a system of public charter high schools dedicated to serving a unique population ” recent immigrants, their families and children who want to learn or perfect English and earn a high school diploma.

When the school was started, there were funds committed through the Jared Polis Foundation for the first three years of operation. Once those three years are up, the school is at risk of having to close its doors if it is not absorbed by our local school district. I am writing to express my complete support for the New America School and share my impressive experiences with its faculty, students and committed community supporters.

The faculty and administration at the New America School are some of the most dedicated, passionate educators I have ever met. They hold high expectations of their students, which is evident based on the academic rigor of their curriculum and classes, and share a compassion toward their students frequently only shared by family.

In fact, one teacher explained that the New America School is parallel to a family since many of these students are on their own or far distances from their immediate families.

The students are courageous and intelligent and have the ability to become our next generation of leaders. Many of the students expressed that they feel valued and welcome at the New America School, which is an essential component to success in education. The New America School is teaching its students to gain a strong education, become analytical thinkers and develop a strong sense of moral character.

The New America School is an excellent example of how Eagle County honors diversity and welcomes newcomers. Please join me in urging the Eagle County School District to support the continued existence and growth of the New America School.
