Eagle fire district makes logo for $400

EAGLE, Colorado ” The Greater Eagle Fire Protection District in Eagle, Colorado is rolling out a new look, and this one is no secret.
Spurred by new National Fire Protection Agency standards and a desire by the former district board president to refresh the district’s look, the new design is a result of more than a year of work within the entire district ” paid, volunteer and administrative members all had a hand in its design.
“It was old and needed to be re-done,” district Fire Chief and Board Administrator Jon Jon Asper said.
Not only that, it wasn’t representative of the district. Logo committee member and volunteer captain Bill Kennedy said for the last 25 years, the district’s stamp “a ladder and fire hydrant ” also featured Mt. Sopris, a vista more familiar to the locals in Glenwood Springs.
“Basically, it’s the Glenwood Springs patch from 25 years ago,” Kennedy said. “It was time for a change.”

The district formed a committee and spent from last February to November drawing different logos and holding meetings to get input from district members.
Now, about $400 later, the district has an emblem representative of what it does. It’s a Maltese cross with the words Fire, EMS, Rescue and Hazmat in each section of the cross and the state flag in the middle of the cross. It’s backdropped by a sleek outline sketch of an Eagle.
“It’s pretty simple,” Kennedy said. “It’s not as elaborate as some other places, but our intent was to not draw too much attention to ourselves.”
Its simplicity is enough to show all the district does, though, while also encompassing the town and county with the Eagle, Asper said.
“It says who we are and what we do and where we’re going,” he said. “It says it all in one little logo.”
The timing of the new logo was appropriate for the district because the National Fire Protection Agency’s new standards say fire departments’ trucks should be more reflective, Kennedy said.
It also seemed fitting, while retrofitting the trucks, to add a new look that was more aesthetically pleasing, Deputy Chief Chris Blankenship said. The trucks were plastered with “Greater Eagle F.P.D.” and was vague, he said.
The new logo, which reads, “Greater Eagle Fire District” is not only straight to the point, but it glows in the dark, which the old logo didn’t, Kennedy said.
“We were going to have to change it over anyway, so we decided to combine it all and save money,” Asper said.
Eagle County spent $36,500 in 2007 to hire a Texas-based design consultant to come up with possible “brands” for the county, including logos and slogans. A slogan has been made but the county has not yet made it public or decided whether to use it.
Kennedy said it will take from six months to a year to have the new logo completely replace the old one.
But at least now the district and the public can look forward to a project that is, in a small way, a snapshot of the community.
“We have a wide range of different viewpoints and perspectives,” Kennedy said. “I think what you see on the trucks and uniforms kind of tells that story.”
